These terms govern your use of TomeReader at tomereader.app (“the Site”). By using the Site, you agree to them. If you don't agree, please don't use the Site.
What TomeReader is
TomeReader is a free web reader for public-domain literature. It pairs the full text of classic works with volunteer-recorded audio narration so you can read, listen, or do both at once. There is no account, no subscription, and no fee. The Site is supported by advertising.
The books and audio
Book texts and metadata come from Project Gutenberg. Audio narration comes from LibriVox. Every work we present is in the public domain in the United States, meaning its copyright has expired. We do not claim ownership of these underlying works, and presenting them here does not create any new copyright in them.
Copyright terms differ between countries. A work that is public domain in the United States may still be protected where you live. You are responsible for confirming that your use of a work is lawful in your own jurisdiction.
What belongs to us
The Site's own material — our editorial commentary on individual books, genre guides, blog articles, reading recommendations, design, and code — is our original work and is not public domain. You're welcome to quote it with attribution and a link. Please don't republish it wholesale or use it to train models without asking first.
Acceptable use
Please don't:
- Scrape or bulk-download the Site in a way that degrades it for other readers.
- Attempt to interfere with, probe, or circumvent the Site's security or infrastructure.
- Interfere with or obscure the advertising that funds the Site.
- Use the Site for anything unlawful.
If you want the underlying texts in bulk, get them from Project Gutenberg directly — they publish them for exactly that purpose and are better set up to serve them.
Your reading data
Your bookmarks, reading progress, bookshelf, and preferences are stored in your own browser, not on our servers. We can't recover them for you, and clearing your browser data erases them. See our Privacy Policy for details on what is and isn't collected.
Availability and accuracy
The Site is provided “as is,” without warranties of any kind. We don't guarantee uninterrupted availability, and we depend on third-party sources for texts, audio, and hosting. Transcription errors, missing chapters, mismatched audio, and gaps in coverage all exist — not every book has a matching audiobook. Reading-time estimates and word counts are approximations. Nothing on the Site is professional advice of any kind.
Limitation of liability
To the fullest extent permitted by law, TomeReader is not liable for any indirect, incidental, or consequential damages arising from your use of the Site, including lost reading progress or unavailability of any work.
Third-party links and ads
The Site links to external sites and displays third-party advertising. We don't control that content and aren't responsible for it. Your dealings with any advertiser are between you and them.
Changes
We may update these terms. The “last updated” date above reflects the most recent revision, and continuing to use the Site after a change means you accept the revised terms.
Reporting a problem
If a work on the Site shouldn't be here — a copyright concern, a mis-attributed text, a bad audio match — tell us and we'll look into it and remove it if warranted. Contact details are on our Privacy Policy page.
